in some areas such as Quality Trout Fishing Areas, Fort Campbell
Military Reservation, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg
and Cherokee Wildlife Management Area.
Brook Trout
Light, worm-like markings on dark upper body. White leading edge
on lower fins. The Brook Trout is the only trout species native
to Tennessee. Its range is primarily in clear cold water at altitudes
above 3,000 feet, and water temperatures below 68 degrees.
Brown Trout
Brown body with large dark spots and reddish dots-many having
halos. Square tail. They can be found moderate to steeply sloped
cold-water streams and rivers, reservoirs and tailraces where water
temperatures remain between 33 and 75 degrees F.
Lake Trout
Dark body
covered with light spots, white leading edge on lower fins. Deeply
Forked tail. They prefer water which rarely exceeds 55 degrees F and a
dissolved oxygen content of more than 6 ppm. Two lakes in Tennessee Dale
Hollow and Watauga meet these requirements.
Rainbow Trout
Look for a
pink stripe and for small black dots throughout the body that extent
into the tail.They are usually found in cold-water rivers and streams
where water temperatures remain under 70 degrees F. They are most
numerous in the higher elevations of easteren Tennessee, but are also
found in several of the colder water reservoirs and suitable tailwaters.
